As befits a used bookstore, for our eighth birthday we’ll be hosting a book swap at Kyoto’s famously delicious Quartetto Corsale! In order to have a proper balance of yin and yang at our venue, we ask attendees to please bring someone of the opposite sex with you. (Spouse, lover, stranger, friend―we don’t mind!)

For those who love yoga, dance, and their bodies!
“Anatomy for Yoga and Dance: Learn from a yogi and physical therapist”
Readily understandable recommendations for moving your body in an anatomically friendly way!
Please attend this class if you love dance and yoga, if you work with your body, or just if you think it’s an interesting topic! We will discuss accidents and injuries, as well as ways to use your body that effectively build your muscles. We recommend this course for all those who want to live a long, full life of exercise! Maki, who is both a physical therapist and a yoga instructor, will discuss anatomy in a readily understandable way. This is a course that will make you think, “Whoa! I’m so glad I came!” We hope you will be satisfied. The instructor speaks Japanese only, but Green e owner and interpreter Yuko will translate, so please feel free to participate!
Every month we will focus on different parts of the body:

About Maki:
While participating in competitive sports in high school, Maki damaged the ligaments in his knee, and thus was introduced to physical therapy. He eventually became a physical therapist because of that experience.
While workng, he began to suffer from recurring lower back pain, and took up yoga hoping to get more exercise. He began to realize how many things yoga and physical therapy had in common; moreover, he began to take an interest in the mental side of yoga as well as the physical, and so he slowly got sucked into the world of yoga. He believes that yoga teaches us to understand “universal principles” of the body, and hopes to promote an injury-free yoga that doesn’t overtax our bodies.
Meditation is said to improve your powers of concentration. Lead by our instructor, Nicole, we will meditate as a group. Group support and instruction will deepen your meditation experience!

Weekend Astrology Workshop: Your Personal Star Map

This workshop will cover the basics of Venus and Mars in the participants specific charts through their signs and house placements.
VENUS:
What we attract into our live is very simply a reflection of what we consciously or unconsciously value. Learning to bring more of what value is a process that includes clarifying, articulating what those values are consciously. Venus is magnetism so the clearer we are the easier it is to attract our highest values running the gamut from things that appeal to us to relationships that reflect those values. We will do journalling between classes to explore what we value most and observe how we manifest those desires. The glyph for Venus can be said to represent a hand mirror. Please bring a hand mirror of your choice to class.
MARS:
While Venus is one of the significator for the Feminine Principle, Masculinity was once defined by Carl Jung as “the ability to know what we want and do what we have to do to get it.” This workshop will look at the participants placements and signs of Mars as the counterpoint to Venus and explore how we go after what we want through ACTION. We will, likewise, do journalling to observe how we clearly express or, perhaps, suppress our desires characteristically in the weeks between classes. Participants will bring objects toward the latter part of the workshop to represent their Mars energy after some weeks.

Elsbeth Herron: Born in Seattle, living in Kyoto
Ms. Herron has been studying and researching astrology for nearly 40 years. She is particularly interested in the ancient relationship between astronomical discoveries and human consciousness. She does not read charts based simply on the 12 signs, but rather places an emphasis on an integrated birth chart reading that reflects the six things that pull and attract you.

Patchouli has been interested in astrology ever since she was forcefully impressed by a Vedic astrologer in India who read her chart with incredible precision. Every time she reads her own horoscope, she learns new things and notices that she becomes much more at peace. Western astrological research has progressed little in Japan, but she keeps up with the progressive overseas literature on astrological psychology. Her main hope is to be able to make some small contribution to others’ peace of mind, and this is the focus of her practice. Fluent in English, Ms. Patchouli also does interpretation and translation for yoga and astrology.

★What is Western Astrology?
Simply, it’s the idea that twelve constellations (signs) of the zodiac, and the movement of the sun, moon, and planets of our solar system through them, govern our personalities, talents, basic natures, partnerships and social relationships, and our fortunes. It can give us a particularly detailed view of our personalities, and each of the twelve signs has it own characteristics, unique psychology, little quirks. If you were “born in Aries” that only tells us one sign, but actually, human personalities are made of qualities combined from many signs. What combination is determined by your date and time of birth.

Kirtan is a practice that has spread in the way of yoga and meditation. In Kirtan, we use Sanskrit mantras, like prayers or the names of gods, that have very strong energies. We chant them while we meditate.
Let yourself fall into the pleasant harmonies of the repeated sounds, and the power of the mantras; before you know it, you’ll be meditating. Kirtan is said to be a easy way to meditate that anyone can practice. Come test out this unique feeling with the rest of us at our Kirtan Night!
Our meditation will be led by Nicole, who is well versed in meditation, yoga, and kirtan alike.
