■Funky Cancer biology 1: April 19th 19:00-21:00 “Let’s Talk about Boobs….! “ Now you’re all listening for sure. Yep, it’s time to talk about breast cancer. Breasts come in many lovely shapes and sizes, and are a delightful part of life. So how can we take care of them? What’s really going on below the surface? How often should I get a mammogram? How do I know if I’m at risk? Will exercising without a bra give me breast cancer? And for the guys: what about breast implants ? do they really cause cancer? How do they work? Do they feel different to real boobs? This is your chance to hang out, drink, and talk all about boobs (in a totally scientific context, of course). Really, what more could you ask for? |
■Funky Cancer biology 2: May 17th 19:00-21:00 “Immunity ? why your body just refuses to die” It’s amazing what our bodies go through every day. There’s a whole army of little immunity soldiers working tirelessly to keep you standing. So how does our immune system work? How can we protect it? Why do I cough up green slime when I get a cold? Why did my insane mother expose me to the chicken pox when I was only 3 years old? Can I get AIDS if someone sneezes on me? I clean all my work surfaces daily with medicinal alcohol ? am I smart or just paranoid? Why do I always pee more when it’s cold? All those nagging little questions you could never be bothered asking. Let’s get an overview of our body’s immunity to enhance understanding. Your body will be more forgiving of future abuse if you’re at least making an effort to understand its needs. |
■Funky Cancer biology 3: May 31st 19:00-21:00 “SMOKING ? when it comes to cancer, you have to have seen this one coming” The big, the bad and the ugly all about smoking and cigarettes. What’s really in them, what do they do to your body, and what changes when you stop. Because there’s a high rate of smoking in Japan, we realize this can be a sensitive issue. The aim is NOT to insult and belittle people who smoke! We simply want to present the TRUTH about the effects of smoking on the human body. Everyone welcome but be prepared to feel squeamish. Lung cancer, emphysema, throat and tongue cancer, arterial clogging, high blood pressure, stroke, even erectile dysfunction ? that’s right guys, smoking can really kill the action in the bedroom. Can you really afford NOT to know? |

Literary couples continue to fascinate the public: Nicole Krauss and Jonathan Safran Foer, Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt, among many others. With the publication of BETWEEN WOMEN: Friendship, Desire, and Marriage in Victorian England by Sharon Marcus and THE TEAHOUSE FIRE: A Novel by Ellis Avery another great literary couple is born―this time with a twist…
While many authors have been romantically involved, it is unusual to find a couple whose work so clearly reflects their relationship.
Marcus’s and Avery’s new books both concern relationships between women in the 19th century. THE TEAHOUSE FIRE (Riverhead, December 2006) is a lesbian love story set in the tea ceremony world of 19th century Japan, completed while Avery was living in Kyoto in 2005, while Marcus’s BETWEEN WOMEN (Princeton University Press, February 2007) is a nonfiction examination of friendships and female marriages in Victorian England. “The books focus on a place and time when people did not divide one another into straight and gay,” explains Marcus. “Both of us are very interested in how that allowed women to make other women central to their lives.”
Avery and Marcus literally wrote their books side by side, so it is not surprising that they credit each other with having a significant influence on their work. “From start to finish, we wrote these books while living together, often in very close quarters! When we lived in Kyoto, Ellis measured the distance between our desks and found that it was a little over five feet,” says Marcus.
“Ellis is always my first reader and I have also been hers. It’s been wonderful for me to have Ellis read my work, since she represents the general public I want to address, and in exchange I’ve been Ellis’s in-house research assistant, scouring bookstores for her and tracking down relevant scholarship that might interest her.”
Avery elaborates on this give-and-take aspect of their writing relationship, saying, “Sharon read the book section by section as it was being written so her input was invaluable. She has taught me how to keep an eye on the broad historical picture―in this case, to choose characters whose lives would be most directly affected by the changes that swept Japan during the late 19th century. In return, she says I’ve taught her to enjoy the novelistic specificity of her examples, in this case, the women whose voices come through in 19th century diaries and letters.”
Marcus and Avery continue to support each other’s work and intend to host a few joint bookstore readings at which they will discuss the happy overlap between their books, their writing processes, and what it’s like to be a two-writer lesbian couple.
